چکیده

The objective of this research is to explore the possibility of using aligned Carbon Nanotube (CNT) based composites in flexures by measuring the kinematics of a composite flexure. The first phase of the research, described in this thesis, is to design, fabricate and assemble a testing apparatus optimized for evaluating aligned CNT based composites. Using existing literature on composites and present limitations on their growth, functional requirements are set down for the testing apparatus. Several designs are qualitatively evaluated, leading to a near optimal design form. This chosen design is modeled as a spring-mass system, and the exact geometry needed to satisfy the functional requirements is determined. The design of the full apparatus is expanded to contain the necessary probes and actuators. The testing apparatus is fabricated using CNC machining, and assembled in a controlled environment to reduce thermal and mechanical error during operation. The system is calibrated and its resolution is found to be 0.021 N over a range of 28.5 N applied force and 1.5 pm over a range of 816 pm applied displacement. Several nonlinearities are noted and corrected mathematically. Thesis Supervisor: Martin L. Culpepper Title: Rockwell International Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering

Predicting Young’s Modulus of Aggregated Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Polymer

Prediction of mechanical properties of carbon nanotube-based composite is one of the important issues which should be addressed reasonably. A proper modeling approach is a multi-scale technique starting from nano scale and lasting to macro scale passing in-between scales of micro and meso. The main goal of this research is to develop a multi-scale modeling approach to extract mechanical propert...

Non-lithographic Fabrication of Carbon Nanotube- Based Sensors for Small-scale Force and Displacement Sensing

SYNOPSIS In this paper, we present a method for placing carbon nanotube (CNT) based piezoresistive sensors onto metallic flexural elements that were created via micromachining. Electron beam evaporation is used to deposit (1) an insulating ceramic thin film layer and (2) metal traces upon the flexure. A shadow mask is used to define the wire patterns. Either a tungsten wire or a focused ion bea...

Design and Analysis of Flexural Mechanism-A Short Review

Flexure mechanisms are a designer’s delight. Except for the limits of elasticity, flexures present few other boundaries as far as applications are concerned. Flexures have been used as bearings to provide smooth and guided motion. For example in precision motion stages; as springs to provide preload, for example in the brushes of a DC motor or a camera lens cap etc. Flexural joints are widely u...
